Kitting and kit groups

Kitting in manufacturing refers to compiling or packaging all the parts needed to manufacture a product or assembly into a kit. Kitting is an efficient way to optimize for your specific manufacturing needs, and a kit can be issued with a single part number and a single bar code (UID). Kits are typically delivered directly to the point of use in a factory in a short period of time. Kitting is used in both manufacturing as well as distribution but often in different ways and for different purposes. Using kitting can help streamline your production processes and optimize production floor logistics and inventory management.

A kit group is a sub-kit of the overall list of materials needed to build a product or assembly that must be delivered to a specific area of the factory.

Example

in printed circuit board manufacturing, an overall kit might be broken down into two distinct kit groups: one for the SMT area and one for the through-hole area as shown in the following illustration.

FactoryLogix kit groups

In FactoryLogix, kit groups are set up in the Logistics area of the NPI client application (Kit Group Setup). NPI administrators can set up as many kit groups as needed, then associate one or more resource types with each kit group.

Note

A single resource type may only be assigned to one kit group.
